This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations1 or be terrified by signs2 in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them.
For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman3 shapes it with his chisel.44
They adorn it with silver5 and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.65
Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak;7 they must be carried because they cannot walk.8 Do not fear them; they can do no harm9 nor can they do any good."106
No one is like you,11 O LORD; you are great,12 and your name is mighty in power.
Who should not revere13 you, O King of the nations?14 This is your due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.
They are all senseless15 and foolish;16 they are taught by worthless wooden idols.179
Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish18 and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made19 is then dressed in blue and purple-- all made by skilled workers.
But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God,20 the eternal King.21 When he is angry,22 the earth trembles;23 the nations cannot endure his wrath.2411
"Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish25 from the earth and from under the heavens.' "a12
But God made26 the earth27 by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom28 and stretched out the heavens29 by his understanding.
