I will winnow1 them with a winnowing fork at the city gates of the land. I will bring bereavement2 and destruction on my people,3 for they have not changed their ways.48
I will make their widows5 more numerous than the sand of the sea. At midday I will bring a destroyer6 against the mothers of their young men; suddenly I will bring down on them anguish and terror.79
The mother of seven will grow faint8 and breathe her last.9 Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced10 and humiliated. I will put the survivors to the sword11 before their enemies,"12 declares the LORD.
Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,13 a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!14 I have neither lent15 nor borrowed, yet everyone curses16 me.
The LORD said, "Surely I will deliver you17 for a good purpose; surely I will make your enemies plead18 with you in times of disaster and times of distress.
"Can a man break iron-- iron from the north19--or bronze?
Your wealth20 and your treasures I will give as plunder,21 without charge,22 because of all your sins throughout your country.2314
I will enslave you to your enemies ina a land you do not know,24 for my anger will kindle a fire25 that will burn against you."
You understand, O LORD; remember me and care for me. Avenge me on my persecutors.26 You are long-suffering27--do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.2816
When your words came, I ate29 them; they were my joy and my heart's delight,30 for I bear your name,31 O LORD God Almighty.
I never sat32 in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand33 was on me and you had filled me with indignation.
