I will make their widows1 more numerous than the sand of the sea. At midday I will bring a destroyer2 against the mothers of their young men; suddenly I will bring down on them anguish and terror.39
The mother of seven will grow faint4 and breathe her last.5 Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced6 and humiliated. I will put the survivors to the sword7 before their enemies,"8 declares the LORD.
Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,9 a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!10 I have neither lent11 nor borrowed, yet everyone curses12 me.
The LORD said, "Surely I will deliver you13 for a good purpose; surely I will make your enemies plead14 with you in times of disaster and times of distress.
"Can a man break iron-- iron from the north15--or bronze?
Your wealth16 and your treasures I will give as plunder,17 without charge,18 because of all your sins throughout your country.1914
I will enslave you to your enemies ina a land you do not know,20 for my anger will kindle a fire21 that will burn against you."
You understand, O LORD; remember me and care for me. Avenge me on my persecutors.22 You are long-suffering23--do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.2416
When your words came, I ate25 them; they were my joy and my heart's delight,26 for I bear your name,27 O LORD God Almighty.
I never sat28 in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand29 was on me and you had filled me with indignation.
Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable?30 Will you be to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails?31
