and if it does evil1 in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider2 the good I had intended to do for it.311
"Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, 'This is what the LORD says: Look! I am preparing a disaster4 for you and devising a plan5 against you. So turn6 from your evil ways,7 each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.'812
But they will reply, 'It's no use.9 We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.10' "
Therefore this is what the LORD says: "Inquire among the nations: Who has ever heard anything like this?11 A most horrible12 thing has been done by Virgin13 Israel.
Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes? Do its cool waters from distant sources ever cease to flow?a15
Yet my people have forgotten14 me; they burn incense15 to worthless idols,16 which made them stumble17 in their ways and in the ancient paths.18 They made them walk in bypaths and on roads not built up.1916
Their land will be laid waste,20 an object of lasting scorn;21 all who pass by will be appalled22 and will shake their heads.2317
Like a wind24 from the east, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back and not my face25 in the day of their disaster."
They said, "Come, let's make plans26 against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest27 will not be lost, nor will counsel from the wise,28 nor the word from the prophets.29 So come, let's attack him with our tongues30 and pay no attention to anything he says."
Listen to me, O LORD; hear what my accusers31 are saying!
Should good be repaid with evil?32 Yet they have dug a pit33 for me. Remember that I stood34 before you and spoke in their behalf35 to turn your wrath away from them.
