But they will reply, 'It's no use.1 We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.2' "
Therefore this is what the LORD says: "Inquire among the nations: Who has ever heard anything like this?3 A most horrible4 thing has been done by Virgin5 Israel.
Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes? Do its cool waters from distant sources ever cease to flow?a15
Yet my people have forgotten6 me; they burn incense7 to worthless idols,8 which made them stumble9 in their ways and in the ancient paths.10 They made them walk in bypaths and on roads not built up.1116
Their land will be laid waste,12 an object of lasting scorn;13 all who pass by will be appalled14 and will shake their heads.1517
Like a wind16 from the east, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back and not my face17 in the day of their disaster."
They said, "Come, let's make plans18 against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest19 will not be lost, nor will counsel from the wise,20 nor the word from the prophets.21 So come, let's attack him with our tongues22 and pay no attention to anything he says."
Listen to me, O LORD; hear what my accusers23 are saying!
Should good be repaid with evil?24 Yet they have dug a pit25 for me. Remember that I stood26 before you and spoke in their behalf27 to turn your wrath away from them.
So give their children over to famine;28 hand them over to the power of the sword.29 Let their wives be made childless and widows;30 let their men be put to death, their young men31 slain by the sword in battle.
Let a cry32 be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring invaders against them, for they have dug a pit33 to capture me and have hidden snares34 for my feet.
