Therefore this is what the LORD says: "Inquire among the nations: Who has ever heard anything like this?1 A most horrible2 thing has been done by Virgin3 Israel.
Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes? Do its cool waters from distant sources ever cease to flow?a15
Yet my people have forgotten4 me; they burn incense5 to worthless idols,6 which made them stumble7 in their ways and in the ancient paths.8 They made them walk in bypaths and on roads not built up.916
Their land will be laid waste,10 an object of lasting scorn;11 all who pass by will be appalled12 and will shake their heads.1317
Like a wind14 from the east, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back and not my face15 in the day of their disaster."
They said, "Come, let's make plans16 against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest17 will not be lost, nor will counsel from the wise,18 nor the word from the prophets.19 So come, let's attack him with our tongues20 and pay no attention to anything he says."
Listen to me, O LORD; hear what my accusers21 are saying!
Should good be repaid with evil?22 Yet they have dug a pit23 for me. Remember that I stood24 before you and spoke in their behalf25 to turn your wrath away from them.
So give their children over to famine;26 hand them over to the power of the sword.27 Let their wives be made childless and widows;28 let their men be put to death, their young men29 slain by the sword in battle.
Let a cry30 be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring invaders against them, for they have dug a pit31 to capture me and have hidden snares32 for my feet.
But you know, O LORD, all their plots to kill33 me. Do not forgive34 their crimes or blot out their sins from your sight. Let them be overthrown before you; deal with them in the time of your anger.35
