"Long ago you broke off your yoke1 and tore off your bonds;2 you said, 'I will not serve you!'3 Indeed, on every high hill4 and under every spreading tree5 you lay down as a prostitute.621
I had planted7 you like a choice vine8 of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt,9 wild vine?
Although you wash10 yourself with soda11 and use an abundance of soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me," declares the Sovereign LORD.1223
"How can you say, 'I am not defiled;13 I have not run after the Baals'?14 See how you behaved in the valley;15 consider what you have done. You are a swift she-camel running16 here and there,
a wild donkey17 accustomed to the desert,18 sniffing the wind in her craving-- in her heat who can restrain her? Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; at mating time they will find her.
Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you said, 'It's no use!19 I love foreign gods,20 and I must go after them.'2126
"As a thief is disgraced22 when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced-- they, their kings and their officials, their priests23 and their prophets.2427
They say to wood,25 'You are my father,' and to stone,26 'You gave me birth.' They have turned their backs27 to me and not their faces;28 yet when they are in trouble,29 they say, 'Come and save30 us!'
Where then are the gods31 you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble!32 For you have as many gods as you have towns,33 O Judah.
