This is what the LORD says: "The people who survive the sword will find favor2 in the desert; I will come to give rest3 to Israel."
The LORD appeared to us in the past,a saying: "I have loved4 you with an everlasting love; I have drawn5 you with loving-kindness.
I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt,6 O Virgin7 Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines8 and go out to dance9 with the joyful.105
Again you will plant11 vineyards on the hills of Samaria;12 the farmers will plant them and enjoy their fruit.136
There will be a day when watchmen14 cry out on the hills of Ephraim, 'Come, let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God.' "157
This is what the LORD says: "Sing16 with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost17 of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, 'O LORD, save18 your people, the remnant19 of Israel.'
See, I will bring them from the land of the north20 and gather21 them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind22 and the lame,23 expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return.
They will come with weeping;24 they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead25 them beside streams of water26 on a level27 path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel's father,28 and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
"Hear the word of the LORD, O nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands:29 'He who scattered30 Israel will gather31 them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.'3211
For the LORD will ransom Jacob and redeem33 them from the hand of those stronger34 than they.
They will come and shout for joy35 on the heights36 of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty37 of the LORD-- the grain, the new wine and the oil,38 the young of the flocks39 and herds. They will be like a well-watered garden,40 and they will sorrow41 no more.
Then maidens will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning42 into gladness; I will give them comfort43 and joy44 instead of sorrow.
I will satisfy45 the priests46 with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty,47" declares the LORD.
This is what the LORD says: "A voice is heard in Ramah,48 mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted,49 because her children are no more."5016
This is what the LORD says: "Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears,51 for your work will be rewarded,52" declares the LORD. "They will return53 from the land of the enemy.
So there is hope54 for your future," declares the LORD. "Your children55 will return to their own land.
"I have surely heard Ephraim's moaning: 'You disciplined56 me like an unruly calf,57 and I have been disciplined. Restore58 me, and I will return, because you are the LORD my God.
After I strayed,59 I repented; after I came to understand, I beat60 my breast. I was ashamed61 and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.'6220
Is not Ephraim my dear son, the child63 in whom I delight? Though I often speak against him, I still remember64 him. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I have great compassion65 for him," declares the LORD.
"Set up road signs; put up guideposts.66 Take note of the highway,67 the road that you take. Return,68 O Virgin69 Israel, return to your towns.
How long will you wander,70 O unfaithful71 daughter? The LORD will create a new thing72 on earth-- a woman will surroundb73 a man."
This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "When I bring them back from captivity,c74 the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: 'The LORD bless75 you, O righteous dwelling,76 O sacred mountain.'7724
People will live78 together in Judah and all its towns--farmers and those who move about with their flocks.7925
I will refresh the weary80 and satisfy the faint."8126
At this I awoke82 and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.
