They came in and took possession1 of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;2 they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster3 upon them.
"See how the siege ramps4 are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,5 the city will be handed over to the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said6 has happened,7 as you now see.
And though the city will be handed over to the Babylonians, you, O Sovereign LORD, say to me, 'Buy the field8 with silver and have the transaction witnessed.9' "
Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
"I am the LORD, the God of all mankind.10 Is anything too hard for me?1128
Therefore, this is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar12 king of Babylon, who will capture it.1329
The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,14 along with the houses15 where the people provoked me to anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings16 to other gods.1730
"The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth;18 indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but provoke19 me with what their hands have made,20 declares the LORD.
From the day it was built until now, this city21 has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove22 it from my sight.
The people of Israel and Judah have provoked23 me by all the evil24 they have done--they, their kings and officials,25 their priests and prophets, the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem.
They turned their backs26 to me and not their faces; though I taught27 them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.28
