They set up their abominable idols1 in the house that bears my Name2 and defiled3 it.
They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom4 to sacrifice their sons and daughtersa to Molech,5 though I never commanded, nor did it enter my mind,6 that they should do such a detestable7 thing and so make Judah sin.836
"You are saying about this city, 'By the sword, famine and plague9 it will be handed over to the king of Babylon'; but this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
I will surely gather10 them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger11 and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.1238
They will be my people,13 and I will be their God.
I will give them singleness14 of heart and action, so that they will always fear15 me for their own good and the good of their children after them.
I will make an everlasting covenant16 with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire17 them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.1841
I will rejoice19 in doing them good20 and will assuredly plant21 them in this land with all my heart and soul.2242
"This is what the LORD says: As I have brought all this great calamity23 on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised24 them.
Once more fields will be bought25 in this land of which you say, 'It is a desolate26 waste, without men or animals, for it has been handed over to the Babylonians.'
Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds27 will be signed, sealed and witnessed28 in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,29 because I will restore30 their fortunes,b declares the LORD."
