Then all the men who knew that their wives1 were burning incense2 to other gods, along with all the women3 who were present--a large assembly--and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt,a4 said to Jeremiah,
"We will not listen5 to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD!617
We will certainly do everything we said we would:7 We will burn incense8 to the Queen of Heaven9 and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our fathers, our kings and our officials10 did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.11 At that time we had plenty of food12 and were well off and suffered no harm.1318
But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings14 to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.1516"
The women added, "When we burned incense17 to the Queen of Heaven18 and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands19 know that we were making cakes20 like her image21 and pouring out drink offerings to her?"
