I looked at the earth, and it was formless and empty;1 and at the heavens, and their light2 was gone.
I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking;3 all the hills were swaying.
I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away.426
I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;5 all its towns lay in ruins6 before the LORD, before his fierce anger.727
This is what the LORD says: "The whole land will be ruined,8 though I will not destroy9 it completely.
Therefore the earth will mourn10 and the heavens above grow dark,11 because I have spoken and will not relent,12 I have decided and will not turn back.13"
At the sound of horsemen and archers14 every town takes to flight.15 Some go into the thickets; some climb up among the rocks.16 All the towns are deserted;17 no one lives in them.
What are you doing,18 O devastated one? Why dress yourself in scarlet and put on jewels19 of gold? Why shade your eyes with paint?20 You adorn yourself in vain. Your lovers21 despise you; they seek your life.2231
I hear a cry as of a woman in labor,23 a groan as of one bearing her first child-- the cry of the Daughter of Zion24 gasping for breath,25 stretching out her hands26 and saying, "Alas! I am fainting; my life is given over to murderers."27
