"My people have been lost sheep;1 their shepherds2 have led them astray3 and caused them to roam on the mountains. They wandered over mountain and hill4 and forgot their own resting place.57
Whoever found them devoured6 them; their enemies said, 'We are not guilty,7 for they sinned against the LORD, their true pasture, the LORD, the hope8 of their fathers.'
"Flee9 out of Babylon;10 leave the land of the Babylonians, and be like the goats that lead the flock.
For I will stir11 up and bring against Babylon an alliance of great nations12 from the land of the north.13 They will take up their positions against her, and from the north she will be captured.14 Their arrows15 will be like skilled warriors who do not return empty-handed.
So Babyloniaa will be plundered;16 all who plunder her will have their fill," declares the LORD.
"Because you rejoice and are glad, you who pillage my inheritance,17 because you frolic like a heifer18 threshing grain and neigh like stallions,
your mother will be greatly ashamed; she who gave you birth will be disgraced.19 She will be the least of the nations-- a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.2013
Because of the LORD's anger she will not be inhabited but will be completely desolate.21 All who pass Babylon will be horrified22 and scoff23 because of all her wounds.2414
"Take up your positions around Babylon, all you who draw the bow.25 Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,26 for she has sinned against the LORD.
Shout27 against her on every side! She surrenders, her towers fall, her walls28 are torn down. Since this is the vengeance29 of the LORD, take vengeance on her; do to her30 as she has done to others.3116
Cut off from Babylon the sower, and the reaper with his sickle at harvest. Because of the sword32 of the oppressor let everyone return to his own people,33 let everyone flee to his own land.34
