He springs up like a flower1 and withers away;2 like a fleeting shadow,3 he does not endure.4

Do you fix your eye on such a one?5 Will you bring hima before you for judgment?6

Who can bring what is pure7 from the impure?8 No one!9

Man's days are determined;10 you have decreed the number of his months11 and have set limits he cannot exceed.12

So look away from him and let him alone,13 till he has put in his time like a hired man.14

"At least there is hope for a tree:15 If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots16 will not fail.17

Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump18 die in the soil,
9
yet at the scent of water19 it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant.20

But man dies and is laid low;21 he breathes his last and is no more.22
11
As water disappears from the sea or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,23
12
so man lies down and does not rise;24 till the heavens are no more,25 men will not awake or be roused from their sleep.26
