"How you have helped the powerless!1 How you have saved the arm that is feeble!2

What advice you have offered to one without wisdom! And what great insight3 you have displayed!

Who has helped you utter these words? And whose spirit spoke from your mouth?4

"The dead are in deep anguish,5 those beneath the waters and all that live in them.

Deatha6 is naked before God; Destructionb7 lies uncovered.8

He spreads out the northern [skies]9 over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.10

He wraps up the waters11 in his clouds,12 yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
9
He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds13 over it.
10
He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters14 for a boundary between light and darkness.15

The pillars of the heavens quake,16 aghast at his rebuke.
12
By his power he churned up the sea;17 by his wisdom18 he cut Rahab19 to pieces.
