Job 2:5-13 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
5 But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,1 and he will surely curse you to your face."2 6 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands;3 but you must spare his life."4 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.5 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.6 9 His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity?7 Curse God and die!"8 10 He replied, "You are talking like a foolisha woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?"9 In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.10

Job's Three Friends

11 When Job's three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite,11 Bildad the Shuhite12 and Zophar the Naamathite,13 heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.14 12 When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him;15 they began to weep aloud,16 and they tore their robes17 and sprinkled dust on their heads.18 13 Then they sat on the ground19 with him for seven days and seven nights.20 No one said a word to him,21 because they saw how great his suffering was.
