though he cannot bear to let it go and keeps it in his mouth,1
yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;2 it will become the venom of serpents3 within him.
He will spit out the riches4 he swallowed; God will make his stomach vomit5 them up.
He will suck the poison6 of serpents; the fangs of an adder will kill him.7
He will not enjoy the streams, the rivers8 flowing with honey9 and cream.10
What he toiled for he must give back uneaten;11 he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.12
For he has oppressed the poor13 and left them destitute;14 he has seized houses15 he did not build.
"Surely he will have no respite from his craving;16 he cannot save himself by his treasure.17
Nothing is left for him to devour; his prosperity will not endure.18
In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;19 the full force of misery will come upon him.20
When he has filled his belly,21 God will vent his burning anger22 against him and rain down his blows upon him.23
