"Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you?1
Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins2 endless?3
You demanded security4 from your brothers for no reason;5 you stripped men of their clothing, leaving them naked.6
You gave no water7 to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,8
though you were a powerful man, owning land9-- an honored man,10 living on it.11
And you sent widows12 away empty-handed13 and broke the strength of the fatherless.14
That is why snares15 are all around you,16 why sudden peril terrifies you,17
why it is so dark18 you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.19
"Is not God in the heights of heaven?20 And see how lofty are the highest stars!
Yet you say, 'What does God know?21 Does he judge through such darkness?22
Thick clouds23 veil him, so he does not see us24 as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.'25
