You gave no water1 to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,2
though you were a powerful man, owning land3-- an honored man,4 living on it.5
And you sent widows6 away empty-handed7 and broke the strength of the fatherless.8
That is why snares9 are all around you,10 why sudden peril terrifies you,11
why it is so dark12 you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.13
"Is not God in the heights of heaven?14 And see how lofty are the highest stars!
Yet you say, 'What does God know?15 Does he judge through such darkness?16
Thick clouds17 veil him, so he does not see us18 as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.'19
Will you keep to the old path that evil men20 have trod?21
They were carried off before their time,22 their foundations23 washed away by a flood.24
They said to God, 'Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?'25
