But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged;1 it strikes2 you, and you are dismayed.3
Should not your piety be your confidence4 and your blameless5 ways your hope?
"Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished?6 Where were the upright ever destroyed?7
As I have observed,8 those who plow evil9 and those who sow trouble reap it.10
At the breath of God11 they are destroyed; at the blast of his anger they perish.12
The lions may roar13 and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions14 are broken.15
The lion perishes for lack of prey,16 and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.17
"A word18 was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper19 of it.20
Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on men,21
fear and trembling22 seized me and made all my bones shake.23
A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.24
