If I say, 'I will forget my complaint,1 I will change my expression, and smile,'
I still dread2 all my sufferings, for I know you will not hold me innocent.3
Since I am already found guilty, why should I struggle in vain?4
Even if I washed myself with soap5 and my hands6 with washing soda,7
you would plunge me into a slime pit8 so that even my clothes would detest me.9
"He is not a man10 like me that I might answer him,11 that we might confront each other in court.12
If only there were someone to arbitrate between us,13 to lay his hand upon us both,14
someone to remove God's rod from me,15 so that his terror would frighten me no more.16
Then I would speak up without fear of him,17 but as it now stands with me, I cannot.18
