Joel 2:8-18 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
8 They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead. They plunge through defenses without breaking ranks. 9 They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses;1 like thieves they enter through the windows.2 10 Before them the earth shakes,3 the sky trembles,4 the sun and moon are darkened,5 and the stars no longer shine.6 11 The LORD 7 thunders8 at the head of his army;9 his forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey his command. The day of the LORD is great;10 it is dreadful. Who can endure it?11

Rend Your Heart

12 "Even now," declares the LORD, "return12 to me with all your heart,13 with fasting and weeping and mourning." 13 Rend your heart14 and not your garments.15 Return16 to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,17 slow to anger and abounding in love,18 and he relents from sending calamity.19 14 Who knows? He may turn20 and have pity21 and leave behind a blessing22-- grain offerings and drink offerings23 for the LORD your God. 15 Blow the trumpet24 in Zion,25 declare a holy fast,26 call a sacred assembly.27 16 Gather the people, consecrate28 the assembly; bring together the elders,29 gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom30 leave his room and the bride her chamber. 17 Let the priests, who minister31 before the LORD, weep32 between the temple porch and the altar.33 Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,34 a byword35 among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?36' "

The LORD's Answer

18 Then the LORD will be jealous37 for his land and take pity38 on his people.
