Before them the earth shakes,1 the sky trembles,2 the sun and moon are darkened,3 and the stars no longer shine.4
The LORD 5 thunders6 at the head of his army;7 his forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey his command. The day of the LORD is great;8 it is dreadful. Who can endure it?9
"Even now," declares the LORD, "return10 to me with all your heart,11 with fasting and weeping and mourning."
Rend your heart12 and not your garments.13 Return14 to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,15 slow to anger and abounding in love,16 and he relents from sending calamity.17
Who knows? He may turn18 and have pity19 and leave behind a blessing20-- grain offerings and drink offerings21 for the LORD your God.
Blow the trumpet22 in Zion,23 declare a holy fast,24 call a sacred assembly.25
Gather the people, consecrate26 the assembly; bring together the elders,27 gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom28 leave his room and the bride her chamber.
Let the priests, who minister29 before the LORD, weep30 between the temple porch and the altar.31 Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,32 a byword33 among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?34' "
Then the LORD will be jealous35 for his land and take pity36 on his people.
The LORD will reply to them: "I am sending you grain, new wine37 and oil,38 enough to satisfy you fully;39 never again will I make you an object of scorn40 to the nations.
"I will drive the northern army41 far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land, with its front columns going into the eastern42 sea and those in the rear into the western sea. And its stench43 will go up; its smell will rise." Surely he has done great things.
