18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.1 I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."219
At these words the Jews were again divided.320
Many of them said, "He is demon-possessed4 and raving mad.5 Why listen to him?"
But others said, "These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.6 Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"7
Then came the Feast of Dedicationa at Jerusalem. It was winter,
and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon's Colonnade.824
The Jews9 gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ,b tell us plainly."1025
Jesus answered, "I did tell you,11 but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me,1226but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.1327My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,14 and they follow me.1528I give them eternal life,16 and they shall never perish;17 no one can snatch them out of my hand.18
