So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him.
Jesus said to them, "My Father1 is always at his work2 to this very day, and I, too, am working."18
For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him;3 not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.419
Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself;5 he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.20For the Father loves the Son6 and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.721For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,8 even so the Son gives life9 to whom he is pleased to give it.22Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,1023that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.1124"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me12 has eternal life13 and will not be condemned;14 he has crossed over from death to life.1525I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come16 when the dead will hear17 the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life18 in himself.
