After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD,1 the LORD said to Joshua2 son of Nun, Moses' aide:

"Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River34 into the land5 I am about to give to them6--to the Israelites.

I will give you every place where you set your foot,7 as I promised Moses.84
Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,9 and from the great river, the Euphrates10--all the Hittite11 country--to the Great Seaa on the west.125
No one will be able to stand up against you13 all the days of your life. As I was with14 Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake15 you.

"Be strong16 and courageous,17 because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers18 to give them.

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey19 all the law20 my servant Moses21 gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left,22 that you may be successful wherever you go.238
Do not let this Book of the Law24 depart from your mouth;25 meditate26 on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.279
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified;28 do not be discouraged,29 for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."3010
So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:31
