Jeremiah 13:26

26 Therefore I uncovered thy skirts before thy face, and thy shame was manifested.

Jeremiah 13:26 Meaning and Commentary

Jeremiah 13:26

Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face
Turn them up, or throw them over the head or face; that is, expose to public shame and disgrace; which was done when their city and temple were burnt, and they were carried captive; hence it follows: that thy shame may appear;
that their sins might appear to themselves and others, of which they had reason to be ashamed. The allusion is to the treatment which captive women sometimes meet with, or adulterous women, to which the Jews are here compared. The Targum is,

``and I also will reveal the confusion of thy sin upon thy face, and thy shame shall be seen.''

Jeremiah 13:26 In-Context

24 Therefore I will scatter them as the stubble that passes away by the wind of the wilderness.
25 This shall be thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me said the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.
26 Therefore I uncovered thy skirts before thy face, and thy shame was manifested.
27 I have seen thine adulteries and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom upon the hills; in the same field I saw thine abominations. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean at last? How long then shall it be?
