1Now when they had passed throughAmphipolisandApollonia, they cametoThessalonica, wherewas a synagogue of the Jews:2AndPaul,as his manner was , went inuntothem, andthreesabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,3Openingandalleging , thatChrist must needs have suffered , and risen againfrom the dead;andthatthisJesus, whomaIpreach unto you,isChrist.4Andsomeofthembelieved , andconsorted with PaulandSilas;and of the devoutGreeks a greatmultitude, and of the chiefwomennot a few.5But the Jews which believed not , moved with envy , took unto themcertainlewdfellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company , and set all the city on an uproar , andassaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bringthemout to the people.6And when they foundthemnot, they drewJasonandcertainbrethrenunto the rulers of the city, crying , These that have turned the world upside down are comehitheralso;7WhomJason hath received : andthesealldocontrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there isanotherking, one Jesus.8And they troubled the peopleand the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.9And when they had takensecurityofJason, and of the other, they letthemgo .
10And the brethrenimmediately sent awayPaulandSilasbynightuntoBerea:whocoming thither wentinto the synagogue of the Jews.11Thesewere more noble than those inThessalonica, in that theyreceived the wordwithall readiness of mind, and searched the scripturesdaily , whether those thingswereso.12Thereforemanyofthembelieved ; also of honourablewomenwhich were Greeks, and of men,not a few.13Butwhen the JewsofThessalonica had knowledgethattheword of God was preachedofPaulatBerea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.14Andthenimmediately the brethren sent awayPaul to go as it wereto the sea:butSilasandTimotheusabodetherestill .
15And they that conductedPaulbroughthimuntoAthens:andreceiving a commandmentuntoSilasandTimotheus for tocometohim with all speed , they departed .
16Now while Paul waited forthematAthens, hisspirit was stirredinhim, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.17Thereforedisputedhein the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons , andin the marketdailywith them that met with him .
18Thencertainphilosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encounteredhim.Andsomesaid , Whatwillthisbabblerbsay ? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strangegods:because he preached unto themJesus, and the resurrection.19And they tookhim, and brought himuntoAreopagus, saying , May we knowwhatthisnewdoctrine, whereofthouspeakest , is?
20For thou bringestcertain strange thingstoourears: we wouldknowthereforewhat these thingsmean .
21
(For all the Atheniansandstrangerswhich were there spent their timeinnothingelse, but either to tell , or to hearsome new thing.)
22ThenPaulstoodin the midst of Mars' hill,c and said , Ye men of Athens, I perceivethatin all thingsye are too superstitious.23For as I passed by , andbeheldyourdevotions ,d I found an altar with thisinscription , TO THE UNKNOWNGOD.Whomtherefore ye ignorantlyworship , himdeclareI unto you.24God that made the worldand all thingstherein , seeing that heisLord of heavenandearth, dwellethnotintemples made with hands;25Neither is worshippedwithmen'shands, as though he needed any thing, seeing hegiveth to alllife, andbreath, and all things;26And hath madeofonebloodallnations of men for to dwellonall the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed , and the bounds of theirhabitation;27
That they should seek the Lord, ifhaply they might feel after him,and find him , though he benotfarfromeveryone of us:28Forinhim we live , andmove , and have our being ; ascertainalso of yourownpoets have said , For we arealsohisoffspring.29
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we oughtnot to think that the Godheadislike unto gold, orsilver, orstone, graven by artandman'sdevice.30Andthetimes of this ignoranceGod winked at ; but nowcommandethallmen every where to repent :
31Because he hath appointed a day,in the which he willjudge the worldinrighteousnessby that manwhom he hath ordained ; whereof he hath giveneassurance unto all men, in that he hath raisedhimfrom the dead.32And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, somemocked : and others said , We will heartheeagainofthis matter.
33SoPauldepartedfromamongthem.34Howbeitcertainmenclave unto him, and believed : among the whichwasDionysius the Areopagite, and a womannamedDamaris, andotherswiththem.
