All the splendor has departed from the Daughter of Zion.1 Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; in weakness they have fled2 before the pursuer.
In the days of her affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into enemy hands, there was no one to help her.3 Her enemies looked at her and laughed4 at her destruction.
Jerusalem has sinned5 greatly and so has become unclean.6 All who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness;7 she herself groans8 and turns away.
Her filthiness clung to her skirts; she did not consider her future.9 Her fall10 was astounding; there was none to comfort11 her. "Look, O LORD, on my affliction,12 for the enemy has triumphed."
The enemy laid hands on all her treasures;13 she saw pagan nations enter her sanctuary14-- those you had forbidden15 to enter your assembly.
All her people groan16 as they search for bread;17 they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. "Look, O LORD, and consider, for I am despised."
"Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?18 Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering19 that was inflicted on me, that the LORD brought on me in the day of his fierce anger?2013
"From on high he sent fire, sent it down into my bones.21 He spread a net22 for my feet and turned me back. He made me desolate,23 faint24 all the day long.
"My sins have been bound into a yokea;25 by his hands they were woven together. They have come upon my neck and the Lord has sapped my strength. He has handed me over26 to those I cannot withstand.
"The Lord has rejected all the warriors in my midst;27 he has summoned an army28 against me tob crush my young men.29 In his winepress30 the Lord has trampled31 the Virgin Daughter32 of Judah.
"This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears.33 No one is near to comfort34 me, no one to restore my spirit. My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed."35
