Lamentations 2:10-22 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
10 The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence;1 they have sprinkled dust2 on their heads3 and put on sackcloth.4 The young women of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground.5 11 My eyes fail from weeping,6 I am in torment within,7 my heart8 is poured out9 on the ground because my people are destroyed,10 because children and infants faint11 in the streets of the city. 12 They say to their mothers, "Where is bread and wine?"12 as they faint like wounded men in the streets of the city, as their lives ebb away13 in their mothers' arms.14 13 What can I say for you?15 With what can I compare you, O Daughter16 of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion?17 Your wound is as deep as the sea.18 Who can heal you? 14 The visions of your prophets were false19 and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity.20 The oracles they gave you were false and misleading.21 15 All who pass your way clap their hands at you;22 they scoff23 and shake their heads24 at the Daughter of Jerusalem:25 "Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty,26 the joy of the whole earth?"27 16 All your enemies open their mouths wide against you;28 they scoff and gnash their teeth29 and say, "We have swallowed her up.30 This is the day we have waited for; we have lived to see it."31 17 The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled32 his word, which he decreed long ago.33 He has overthrown you without pity,34 he has let the enemy gloat over you,35 he has exalted the horna of your foes.36 18 The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.37 O wall of the Daughter of Zion,38 let your tears39 flow like a river day and night;40 give yourself no relief, your eyes no rest.41 19 Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart42 like water in the presence of the Lord.43 Lift up your hands44 to him for the lives of your children, who faint45 from hunger at the head of every street. 20 "Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring,46 the children they have cared for?47 Should priest and prophet be killed48 in the sanctuary of the Lord?49 21 "Young and old lie together in the dust of the streets; my young men and maidens have fallen by the sword.50 You have slain them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered them without pity.51 22 "As you summon to a feast day, so you summoned against me terrors52 on every side. In the day of the LORD's anger no one escaped53 or survived; those I cared for and reared,54 my enemy has destroyed."
