The visions of your prophets were false1 and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity.2 The oracles they gave you were false and misleading.315
All who pass your way clap their hands at you;4 they scoff5 and shake their heads6 at the Daughter of Jerusalem:7 "Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty,8 the joy of the whole earth?"916
All your enemies open their mouths wide against you;10 they scoff and gnash their teeth11 and say, "We have swallowed her up.12 This is the day we have waited for; we have lived to see it."1317
The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled14 his word, which he decreed long ago.15 He has overthrown you without pity,16 he has let the enemy gloat over you,17 he has exalted the horna of your foes.1818
The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.19 O wall of the Daughter of Zion,20 let your tears21 flow like a river day and night;22 give yourself no relief, your eyes no rest.2319
Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart24 like water in the presence of the Lord.25 Lift up your hands26 to him for the lives of your children, who faint27 from hunger at the head of every street.
"Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring,28 the children they have cared for?29 Should priest and prophet be killed30 in the sanctuary of the Lord?3121
"Young and old lie together in the dust of the streets; my young men and maidens have fallen by the sword.32 You have slain them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered them without pity.3322
"As you summon to a feast day, so you summoned against me terrors34 on every side. In the day of the LORD's anger no one escaped35 or survived; those I cared for and reared,36 my enemy has destroyed."
