Hypocrisy, Law, and the Kingdom of God

14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these [things], and they ridiculed him. 15 And he said to them, "You are the ones who justify themselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts! For [what is] [considered] exalted among men [is] an abomination in the sight of God. 16 "The law and the prophets [were] until John; from that time [on] the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone is urgently presseda into it. 17 But it is easier [for] heaven and earth to pass away than [for] one stroke of a letter of the law to become invalid.

On Divorce

18 "Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and the one who marries a woman divorced from [her] husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 "Now a certain man was rich, and dressed [in] purple cloth and fine linen, feasting sumptuously every day. 20 And a certain poor man {named}b Lazarus, covered with sores, lay at his gate, 21 and was longing to be filled with what fell from the table of the rich man. But even the dogs came [and]c licked his sores. 22 Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels to {Abraham's side}.d And the rich man also died and was buried. 23 And in Hades he lifted up his eyes [as he]e was in torment [and]f saw Abraham from a distance, and Lazarus {at his side}.g 24 And he called out [and]h said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he could dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering pain in this flame!'
