Deuteronomy 17:14

When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth
thee
The land of Canaan:

and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein;
be entirely in the possession of it, and settled in it; it seems to denote some time of continuance in it, as it was, before they thought of setting a king over them, about which are the following instructions:

and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations
that are round about me;
which was what would and did lead them to such a thought and resolution; observing that the neighbouring nations had kings over them, they were desirous of being like them as to the form of their civil government, and have a king as they had.

12 L'homme qui, par orgueil, n'écoutera pas le sacrificateur placé là pour servir l'Eternel, ton Dieu, ou qui n'écoutera pas le juge, cet homme sera puni de mort. Tu ôteras ainsi le mal du milieu d'Israël,

13 afin que tout le peuple entende et craigne, et qu'il ne se livre plus à l'orgueil.

15 tu mettras sur toi un roi que choisira l'Eternel, ton Dieu, tu prendras un roi du milieu de tes frères, tu ne pourras pas te donner un étranger, qui ne soit pas ton frère.

16 Mais qu'il n'ait pas un grand nombre de chevaux; et qu'il ne ramène pas le peuple en Egypte pour avoir beaucoup de chevaux; car l'Eternel vous a dit: Vous ne retournerez plus par ce chemin-là.
