The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here.

For it is written: " 'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;

they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'a "112
Jesus answered, "It says: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'b "213
When the devil had finished all this tempting,3 he left him4 until an opportune time.

Jesus returned to Galilee5 in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.615
He taught in their synagogues,7 and everyone praised him.

He went to Nazareth,8 where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,9 as was his custom. And he stood up to read.1017
The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,11 because he has anointed me to preach good news12 to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."c13
