Jeremia 35

1 Dies ist das Wort, das vom HERRN geschah zu Jeremia zur Zeit Jojakims, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs in Juda, und sprach:

2 Gehe hin zum Hause der Rechabiter und rede mit ihnen und führe sie in des HERRN Haus, in der Kapellen eine, und schenke ihnen Wein.

3 Da nahm ich Jaasanja, den Sohn Jeremia's, des Sohnes Habazinjas, samt seinen Brüdern und allen seinen Söhnen und das ganze Haus der Rechabiter

4 und führte sie in des HERRN Haus, in die Kapelle der Kinder Hanans, des Sohnes Jigdaljas, des Mannes Gottes, welche neben der Fürstenkapelle ist, über der Kapelle Maasejas, des Sohnes Sallums, des Torhüters.

5 Und ich setzte den Kindern von der Rechabiter Hause Becher voll Wein und Schalen vor und sprach zu ihnen: Trinkt Wein!

6 Sie aber antworteten: Wir trinken nicht Wein; denn unser Vater Jonadab, der Sohn Rechabs, hat uns geboten und gesagt: Ihr und eure Kinder sollt nimmermehr Wein trinken

7 und kein Haus bauen, keinen Samen säen, keinen Weinberg pflanzen noch haben, sondern sollt in Hütten wohnen euer Leben lang, auf daß ihr lange lebt in dem Lande, darin ihr wallt.

8 Also gehorchen wir der Stimme unsers Vater Jonadab, des Sohnes Rechabs, in allem, was er uns geboten hat, daß wir keinen Wein trinken unser Leben lang, weder wir noch unsre Weiber noch Söhne noch Töchter,

9 und bauen auch keine Häuser, darin wir wohnten, und haben weder Weinberge noch Äcker noch Samen,

10 sondern wohnen in Hütten und gehorchen und tun alles, wie unser Vater Jonadab geboten hat.

11 Als aber Nebukadnezar, der König zu Babel, herauf ins Land zog, sprachen wir: "Kommt, laßt uns gen Jerusalem ziehen vor dem Heer der Chaldäer und der Syrer!" und sind also zu Jerusalem geblieben.

12 Da geschah des HERRN Wort zu Jeremia und sprach:

13 So spricht der HERR Zebaoth, der Gott Israels; gehe hin und sprich zu denen in Juda und zu den Bürgern zu Jerusalem: Wollt ihr euch denn nicht bessern, daß ihr meinem Wort gehorcht? spricht der HERR.

14 Die Worte Jonadabs, des Sohnes Rechabs, die er den Kindern geboten hat, daß sie nicht sollen Wein trinken, werden gehalten, und sie trinken keinen Wein bis auf diesen Tag, darum daß sie ihres Vaters Gebot gehorchen. Ich aber habe stets euch predigen lassen; doch gehorchtet ihr mir nicht.

15 So habe ich auch stets zu euch gesandt alle meine Knechte, die Propheten, und lasse sagen: Bekehrt euch ein jeglicher von seinem bösen Wesen, und bessert euren Wandel und folgt nicht andern Göttern nach, ihnen zu dienen, so sollt ihr in dem Lande bleiben, welches ich euch und euren Vätern gegeben habe. Aber ihr wolltet eure Ohren nicht neigen noch mir gehorchen, {~}

16 so doch die Kinder Jonadabs, des Sohnes Rechabs, haben ihres Vaters Gebot, das er ihnen geboten hat, gehalten. Aber dies Volk gehorchte mir nicht.

17 Darum so spricht der HERR, der Gott Zebaoth und der Gott Israels: Siehe, ich will über Juda und über alle Bürger zu Jerusalem kommen lassen all das Unglück, das ich wider sie geredet habe, darum daß ich zu ihnen geredet habe und sie nicht wollen hören, daß ich gerufen habe und sie mir nicht wollen antworten.

18 Und zum Hause der Rechabiter sprach Jeremia: So spricht der HERR Zebaoth, der Gott Israels: Darum daß ihr dem Gebot eures Vaters Jonadab habt gehorcht und alle seine Gebote gehalten und alles getan, was er euch geboten hat,

19 darum spricht der HERR Zebaoth, der Gott Israels, also: Es soll dem Jonadab, dem Sohne Rechabs, nimmer fehlen, es soll jemand von den Seinen allezeit vor mir stehen.

Chapter 35

The obedience of the Rechabites. (1-11) The Jews' disobedience to the Lord. (12-19)

Verses 1-11 Jonadab was famous for wisdom and piety. He lived nearly ( 2 Kings. 10:15 ) to drink wine. He also appointed them to dwell in tents, or movable dwelling: this would teach them not to think of settling any where in this world. To keep low, would be the way to continue long in the land where they were strangers. Humility and contentment are always the best policy, and men's surest protection. Also, that they might not run into unlawful pleasures, they were to deny themselves even lawful delights. The consideration that we are strangers and pilgrims should oblige us to abstain from all fleshly lusts. Let them have little to lose, and then losing times would be the less dreadful: let them sit loose to what they had, and then they might with less pain be stript of it. Those are in the best frame to meet sufferings who live a life of self-denial, and who despise the vanities of the world. Jonadab's posterity observed these rules strictly, only using proper means for their safety in a time of general suffering.

Verses 12-19 The trial of the Rechabites' constancy was for a sign; it made the disobedience of the Jews to God the more marked. The Rechabites were obedient to one who was but a man like themselves, and Jonadab never did for his seed what God has done for his people. Mercy is promised to the Rechabites. We are not told respecting the performance of this promise; but doubtless it was performed, and travellers say the Rechabites may be found a separate people to this day. Let us follow the counsels of our pious forefathers, and we shall find good in so doing.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 35

In this chapter the disobedience of the people of the Jews unto God is aggravated by the obedience of the Rechabites to their father; and the one are threatened with the judgments of God upon them, and the other have a promise of the divine blessing. The time of this prophecy is observed; Jer 35:1; an order to bring the Rechabites into one of the chambers of the temple, which was done accordingly, Jer 35:2-4; wine is set before them to drink; which they refuse; alleging the command of their father to the contrary, Jer 35:5-7; which they had carefully and constantly obeyed in every part of it, excepting that which respects their dwelling in tents; for which they give a reason, Jer 35:8-11; by this instance of filial obedience to parents, the disobedience of the Jews towards their Father, which is in heaven, is aggravated; who, though he gave them laws and commandments, and sent his prophets to put them in mind of them, and exhort them to obedience, yet hearkened not to them, Jer 35:12-15; wherefore the Lord threatens to bring all the evil on them he had pronounced, Jer 35:16,17; and promises the sons of Rechab that there should be always some of them that should minister unto him, Jer 35:18,19.
