When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"14
They replied, "Some say John the Baptist;1 others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."215"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"16
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ,a the Son of the living God."317
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man,4 but by my Father in heaven.518And I tell you that you are Peter,b6 and on this rock I will build my church,7 and the gates of Hadesc will not overcome it.d19I will give you the keys8 of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will bee bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will bef loosed in heaven."920
Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone10 that he was the Christ.
From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem11 and suffer many things12 at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law,13 and that he must be killed14 and on the third day15 be raised to life.1622
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"
Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan!17 You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
