With what shall I come before12 the LORD and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?137
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,14 with ten thousand rivers of oil?15 Shall I offer my firstborn16 for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?178
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly18 and to love mercy and to walk humbly19 with your God.20
Listen! The LORD is calling to the city-- and to fear your name is wisdom-- "Heed the rod21 and the One who appointed it.a10
Am I still to forget, O wicked house, your ill-gotten treasures and the short ephah,b which is accursed?2211
Shall I acquit a man with dishonest scales,23 with a bag of false weights?2412
Her rich men are violent;25 her people are liars26 and their tongues speak deceitfully.2713
Therefore, I have begun to destroy28 you, to ruin you because of your sins.
