Ephesians 5:28

28 And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They're really doing themselves a favor - since they're already "one" in marriage.

Ephesians 5:28 Meaning and Commentary

Ephesians 5:28

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies
It is a common saying with the Jews, that a man's wife is (wpwgk) , "as his own body" F18; and it is one of the precepts of their wise men, that a man should honour his wife more than his body, (wpwgk hbhaw) , and "love her as his body" F19; for as they also say, they are but one body F20; the apostle seems to speak in the language of his countrymen; however, his doctrine and theirs agree in this point: wherefore

he that loveth his wife loveth himself;
because she is one body and flesh with him.

Ephesians 5:28 In-Context

26 Christ's love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her,
27 dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness.
28 And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They're really doing themselves a favor - since they're already "one" in marriage.
29 No one abuses his own body, does he? No, he feeds and pampers it. That's how Christ treats us, the church,
30 since we are part of his body.
