Leviticus 24:7 Meaning and Commentary

Leviticus 24:7

And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon [each] row
Two cups of frankincense, in each of which was an handful of it, and which were set by each row of the cakes, as Jarchi observes: that it may be on the bread for a memorial;
or "for the bread", instead of it, for a memorial of it; that being to be eaten by the priests, and this to be burned on the altar to the Lord, as follows: [even] an offering made by fire unto the Lord;
not the bread that was after a time taken away, and eaten by the priests, but the frankincense.

Leviticus 24:7 In-Context

5 "Take fine flour and bake twelve loaves of bread, using about four quarts of flour to a loaf.
6 Arrange them in two rows of six each on the Table of pure gold before God.
7 Along each row spread pure incense, marking the bread as a memorial; it is a gift to God.
8 Regularly, every Sabbath, this bread is to be set before God, a perpetual covenantal response from Israel.
9 The bread then goes to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a Holy Place. It is their most holy share from the gifts to God. This is a perpetual decree."
