11Then allIsraelgathered to David at Hebronaand said, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.
"In timespast, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel ; and the LORD your Godsaid to you, '2You shall shepherd My peopleIsrael, and you shall be princeover My peopleIsrael.' "
So all the elders of Israelcame to the king at Hebron, and Davidmade a covenant with them in Hebronbefore the LORD ; and 3they anointedDavidkingoverIsrael, 4according to the word of the LORDthroughSamuel.
Then David and allIsraelwent to Jerusalem (5that is, Jebus ); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.

So the threebrokethrough the camp of the Philistines and drewwater from the well of Bethlehemwhich was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David ; nevertheless Davidwould not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD ;
and he said, "Be it far from me before my God that I should dothis. Shall I drink the blood of thesemen who went iat the risk of their lives ? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. Thesethings the threemightymendid.
