Now 1an oldprophet was living in Bethel; and his asonscame and told him all the deedswhich the man of God had done that day in Bethel; the wordswhich he had spoken to the king, these also they related to their father.
Their fathersaid to them, "bWhichway did he go?" Now his sonschad seen the waywhich the man of Godwhocame from Judah had gone.
Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the donkey for me." So they saddled the donkey for him and he rode away on it.
So he wentafter the man of God and found him sittingunderdan oak; and he said to him, "Are you the man of Godwhocame from Judah?" And he said, "I am."
Then he said to him, "Comehome with me and eatbread."
He said, "2I cannotreturn with you, norgo with you, nor will I eatbread or drinkwater with you in thisplace.
"For a command came to me 3by the word of the LORD, 'You shall eatnobread, nordrinkwaterthere; do not return by going the waywhich you came.' "
He said to him, "4I also am a prophetlike you, and 5an angelspoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eatbread and drinkwater.' " But 6he lied to him.
So he wentback with him, and atebread in his house and drankwater.
Now it came about, as they were sittingdown at the table, that the word of the LORDcame to the prophetwho had brought him back;
and he cried to the man of Godwhocame from Judah, saying, "Thussays the LORD, 'Because you have edisobeyed the fcommand of the LORD, and have not observed the commandmentwhich the LORD your Godcommanded you,
but have returned and eatenbread and drunkwater in the place of which He said to you, "Eatnobread and drinknowater "; your body shall not come to the grave of your fathers.' "
It came about after he had eatenbread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, for the prophetwhom he had broughtback.
Now when he had gone, 7a lionmet him on the way and killed him, and his body was thrown on the road, with the donkeystandingbeside it; the lion also was standingbeside the body.
And behold, menpassed by and saw the bodythrown on the road, and the lionstandingbeside the body; so they came and told it in the citywhere8the oldprophetlived.
Now when the prophetwhobrought him back from the wayheard it, he said, "It is the man of God, whogdisobeyed the hcommand of the LORD; therefore the LORD has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word of the LORDwhich He spoke to him."
Then he spoke to his sons, saying, "Saddle the donkey for me." And they saddled it.
He went and found his bodythrown on the road with the donkey and the lionstandingbeside the body; the lion had not eaten the bodynortorn the donkey.
So the prophettook up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back, and he came to the city of the oldprophet to mourn and to bury him.
He laid his body in his own grave, and they mournedover him, saying, "9Alas, my brother!"
31After he had buried him, he spoke to his sons, saying, "When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; 10lay my bonesbeside his bones.
"11For the thing shall surelycome to passwhich he cried by the word of the LORDagainst the altar in Bethel and 12againstall the houses of the highplaceswhich are in the cities of 13Samaria."
