11Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israelfled from before the Philistines and fellslain2on MountGilboa.

The PhilistinesovertookSaul and his sons ; and the Philistinesakilled3Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua the sons of Saul.
34The battlewentheavilyagainstSaul, and the archersbhit him; and he was badlywounded by the archers.
45Then Saulsaid to his armorbearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, otherwise6theseuncircumcised will come and pierce me through and makesport of me." But his armorbearerwould not, for he was greatlyafraid. 7So Saultook his sword and fell on it.

When his armorbearersaw that Saul was dead, he alsofell on his sword and died with him.

Thus Sauldied with his threesons, his armorbearer, and all his men on that daytogether.

When the men of Israelwho were on the otherside of the valley, with those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled ; then the Philistinescame and lived in them.

It came about on the cnextday when the Philistinescame to strip the slain, that they foundSaul and his threesonsfallen on MountGilboa.

They cutoff his head and strippedoff his weapons, and sent them dthroughout the land of the Philistines, 8to carry the good news9to the house of their idols and to the people.

They put his weapons in the etemple of 10Ashtaroth, and 11they fastened his body to the wall of 12Beth-shan.

Now when 13the inhabitants of Jabesh-gileadheardfwhat the Philistines had done to Saul,
1214all the valiantmenrose and walkedallnight, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and 15burned them there.

They took their bones and 16buried them under17the tamarisktree at Jabesh, and 18fastedsevendays.
