11Then Rehoboamwent to Shechem, for allIsrael had come to Shechem to make him king.
When Jeroboam the son of Nebatheard of it (for 2he was in Egyptwhere he had fled from the presence of KingSolomon ), Jeroboamreturned from Egypt.
So they sent and summoned him. When Jeroboam and allIsraelcame, they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
"Your fathermade our 3yokehard ; now therefore lighten the hardservice of your father and his heavyyokewhich he put on us, and we will serve you."
He said to them, "Return to me again in threedays." So the peopledeparted.
Then KingRehoboam4consulted with the elderswhohadaserved his fatherSolomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you counsel me to answerthispeople ?"
They spoke to him, saying, "If you will be kind to thispeople and please them and 5speakgoodwords to them, then they will be your servantsforever ."
But he 6forsook the counsel of the elderswhich they had given him, and consulted with the youngmenwhogrew up with him band served him.
So he said to them, "Whatcounsel do you give that we may answerthispeople, who have spoken to me, saying, 'Lighten the yokewhich your fatherput on us'?"
The youngmenwhogrew up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall say to the peoplewhospoke to you, saying, 'Your fathermade our yokeheavy, but you make it lighter for us.' Thus you shall say to them, 'My littlefinger is thickerthan my father'sloins !
11'Whereas my fatherloaded you with a heavyyoke, I will add to your yoke ; my fatherdisciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.' "
So Jeroboam and all the peoplecame to Rehoboam on the thirdday as the king had cdirected, saying, "Return to me on the thirdday."
The kinganswered them harshly, and KingRehoboamforsook the counsel of the elders.
He spoke to them according to the advice of the youngmen, saying, "dMy fathermade your yokeheavy, but I will add to it; my fatherdisciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions."
So the king did not listen to the people, 7for it was a turn of events from God8that the LORD might establish His word, which He spokethroughAhijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
When allIsrael saw that the king did not listen to them the peopleanswered the king, saying, "9Whatportion do we have in David ? We have noinheritance in the son of Jesse. Everyman to your tents, O Israel ; Nowlook after your own house, David." 10So allIsraeldeparted to their tents.
But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboamreignedover them.
Then KingRehoboamsentHadoram, who was 11over the forcedlabor, and the sons of Israelstoned him eto death. And KingRehoboammadehaste to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.
So 12Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to thisday.
