31Knowthisfirst of all, that 2in the lastdays3mockers will come with their mocking, 4followingafter their ownlusts,
4
and saying, "5Where is the promise of His 6coming ? For ever since the fathers7fellasleep, allcontinuesjust as it was 8from the beginning of creation."
5
For awhen they maintainthis, it escapes their notice that 9by the word of God the heavensexistedlongago and the earth was 10formed out of water and by water,
6throughwhich11the world at that time was 12destroyed, being flooded with water.
7
But by His word13the presentheavens and earth are being reserved for 14fire, kept for 15the day of judgment and destruction of ungodlymen.
8
But do not let thisone fact escape your notice, 16beloved, that with the Lordoneday is like a thousandyears, and 17a thousandyearslikeoneday.
918The Lord is not slow about His promise, as somecountslowness, but 19is patienttoward you, 20not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
A New Heaven and Earth
10
But 21the day of the Lord22will comelike a thief, in which23the heavens24will passaway with a roar and the 25elements will be destroyed with intenseheat, and 26the earth and bits works will be cburned up.
11
Since allthesethings are to be destroyed in thisway, whatsort of people ought you to be in holyconduct and godliness,
1227looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which28the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the 29elements will melt with intenseheat !
13
But according to His 30promise we are looking for 31newheavens and a newearth, 32in whichrighteousnessdwells.
1433Therefore, 34beloved, since you look for thesethings, be diligent to be 35found by Him in peace, 36spotless and blameless,
15
and regard the 37patience of our Lord as salvation ; just as also38our belovedbrotherPaul, 39according to the wisdomgiven him, wrote to you,
16
as also in all his letters, speaking in them of 40thesethings, 41in which are somethingshard to understand, which the untaught and 42unstabledistort, as they do also43the rest of the Scriptures, to their owndestruction.
17
You therefore, 44beloved, knowing this beforehand, 45be on your guardso that you are not carriedaway by 46the error of 47unprincipledmen and 48fall from your ownsteadfastness,
18
but grow in the grace and 49knowledge of our 50Lord and SaviorJesusChrist. 51To Him be the glory, bothnow and to the day of eternity. Amen.
