Now it was afterthis that 1Absalom the son of David had a beautifulsister whose name was 2Tamar, and 3Amnon the son of Davidloved her.
2Amnon was so frustratedbecause of his sisterTamar that he made himself ill, for she was a virgin, and it seemedahard to Amnon to doanything to her.
But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of b4Shimeah, David'sbrother ; and Jonadab was a veryshrewdman.
He said to him, "O son of the king, why are you sodepressedmorning after morning ? Will you not tell me?" Then Amnonsaid to him, "I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brotherAbsalom."
5Jonadab then said to him, "Liedown on your bed and pretend to be ill ; when your fathercomes to see you, say to him, 'Please let my sisterTamarcome and give me some food to eat, and let her prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat from her hand.' "
So Amnonlaydown and pretended to be ill ; when the kingcame to see him, Amnonsaid to the king, "Please let my sisterTamarcome and 5make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand."
Then Davidsent to the house for Tamar, saying, "Gonow to your brotherAmnon'shouse, and preparefood for him."
So Tamarwent to her brotherAmnon'shouse, and he was lyingdown. And she tookdough, kneaded it, madecakes in his sight, and baked the cakes.
She took the pan and cdished them out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnonsaid, "6Have everyonego out from me." So everyonewent out from him.
Then Amnonsaid to Tamar, "Bring the food into the dbedroom, that I may eat from your hand." So Tamartook the cakeswhich she had made and brought them into the bedroom to her brotherAmnon.
When she brought them to him to eat, he 7tookhold of her and said to her, "Come, lie with me, my sister."
But she answered him, "No, my brother, do not violate me, for 8such a thing is not done in Israel ; do not dothis9disgracefulthing !
"As for me, where could I egetrid of my reproach ? And as for you, you will be like one of the ffools in Israel. Now therefore, pleasespeak to the king, for 10he will not withhold me from you."
However, he would not listen to gher; since he was strongerthan she, he 11violated her and lay with her.
Then Amnonhated her with a verygreathatred ; for the hatred with which he hated her was greaterthan the love with which he had loved her. And Amnonsaid to her, "Get up, go away!"
But she said to him, "No, becausethiswrong in sending me away is greaterthan the other that you have done to me!" Yet he would not listen to her.
Then he called his youngman who attended him and said, "Nowthrowthiswoman out of my presence, and lock the doorbehind her."
Now she had on 12a hlong-sleevedgarment ; for in thismanner the virgindaughters of the kingdressed themselves in robes. Then his attendanttook her out and locked the doorbehind her.
1913Tamarputiashes on her head and 14tore her jlong-sleevedgarmentwhich was on her; and 15she put her hand on her head and went away, cryingaloud as she went.
Then Absalom her brothersaid to her, "Has Amnon your brotherbeen with you? But nowkeepsilent, my sister, he is your brother ; do not takethismatter to heart." So Tamarremained and was desolate in her brotherAbsalom'shouse.
Now when KingDavidheard of allthesematters, he was veryangry.
But Absalom did not speak to Amnon16eithergoodorbad ; for 17AbsalomhatedAmnonbecause he had violated his sisterTamar.
Now it came about after two fullyears that Absalom18hadsheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is nearEphraim, and Absalominvitedall the king'ssons.
