Then Davidsaid to him, "From where do you come?" And he said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel."

Davidsaid to him, "1How did thingsgo? Pleasetell me." And he said, "The people have fled from the battle, and alsomany of the people have fallen and are dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are deadalso."

So Davidsaid to the youngman who told him, "How do you know that Saul and his sonJonathan are dead?"

The youngman who told him said, "By chance I happened to be on 2MountGilboa, and behold, 3Saul was leaning on his spear. And behold, the chariots and the horsemenpursued him closely.

"When he lookedbehind him, he saw me and called to me. And I said, 'Here I am.'

"He said to me, 'Who are you?' And I [a]answered him, '4I am an Amalekite.'

"Then he said to me, 'Pleasestandbeside me and kill me, for agony has seized me because my [b]lifestill lingers in me.'

"So I stoodbeside him 5and killed him, because I knew that he could not liveafter he had fallen. And 6I took the crownwhich was on his head and the braceletwhich was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord."

Then 7Davidtookhold of his clothes and tore them, and so also did all the menwho were with him.

They mourned and wept and 8fasteduntilevening for Saul and his sonJonathan and for the people of the LORD and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

Davidsaid to the youngman who told him, "Where are you from?" And he [c]answered, "9I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite."
