1Belshazzar the kingaheld a great1feast for a thousand of his nobles, and he was drinkingwine in the presence of the thousand.
2
When Belshazzartasted the wine, he gaveorders to bring the gold and silver2vesselswhichNebuchadnezzar his bfather had taken out of the templewhich was in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them.
3Then they brought the goldvessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of Godwhich was in Jerusalem ; and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubinesdrank from them.
4
They 3drank the wine and praised the gods of 4gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.
5Suddenly the fingers of a man'shandemerged and began writingopposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king'spalace, and the kingsaw the cback of the hand that did the writing.
6Then the king'sd5facegrewpale and his thoughtsalarmed him, and his 6hipjointswentslack and his 7knees began knockingtogether.
7
The kingcalledaloud to bring in the 8conjurers, the eChaldeans and the diviners. The kingspoke and said to the wisemen of Babylon, "Anymanwho can readthisinscription and explain its interpretation to me shall be 9clothed with purple and have a 10necklace of goldaround his neck, and haveauthority as f11third ruler in the kingdom."
8Thenall the king'swisemencame in, but 12they could not read the inscription or makeknown its interpretation to the king.
9ThenKingBelshazzar was greatly13alarmed, his g14facegrew even paler, and his nobles were perplexed.
10
The queenentered the banquethhallbecause of the words of the king and his nobles ; the queenspoke and said, "15O king, liveforever ! Do not let your thoughtsalarm you or your iface be pale.
11"There is a 16man in your kingdom in whom is ja 17spirit of the holygods ; and in the days of your father, illumination, insight and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him. And KingNebuchadnezzar, your father, your fatherk18the king, appointed him chief of the lmagicians, conjurers, mChaldeans and diviners.
12
"This was because an 19extraordinaryspirit, knowledge and insight, interpretation of dreams, explanation of enigmas and solving of difficultproblems were found in this Daniel, whom the kingnamed20Belteshazzar. Let Danielnow be summoned and he will declare the interpretation."
13ThenDaniel was brought in before the king. The kingspoke and said to Daniel, "Are you that Danielwho is one of the n21exiles from Judah, whom my father the king22brought from Judah ?
14
"Now I have heardabout you that oa spirit of the gods is in you, and that illumination, insight and extraordinarywisdom have been found in you.
15
"Just now the 23wisemen and the conjurers were brought in before me that they might readthisinscription and make its interpretationknown to me, but they 24could not declare the interpretation of the pmessage.
16
"But I personally have heardabout you, that you are able to giveinterpretations and solvedifficultproblems. Nowif you are able to read the inscription and make its 25interpretationknown to me, you will be 26clothed with purple and wear a necklace of goldaround your neck, and you will haveauthority as the qthird ruler in the kingdom."
17ThenDanielanswered and saidbefore the king, "rKeep your 27gifts for yourself or give your rewards to someoneelse ; however, I will read the inscription to the king and make the interpretationknown to him.
18
"sO king, the 28MostHighGod29grantedtsovereignty, 30grandeur, glory and majesty to Nebuchadnezzar your father.
19"Because of the grandeurwhich He bestowed on him, all the peoples, nations and men of every ulanguagefeared and trembledbefore him; 31whomever he wished he killed and whomever he wished he sparedalive ; and whomever he wished he elevated and whomever he wished he humbled.
20
"But when his heart was 32lifted up and his spiritbecame so v33proud that he behavedarrogantly, he was 34deposed from his royalthrone and his glory was takenaway from him.
21
"He was also 35drivenaway from wmankind, and his heart was madelike that of beasts, and his dwellingplace was with the 36wilddonkeys. He was givengrass to eat like cattle, and his body was drenched with the dew of heavenuntil he recognized that the 37MostHighGod is ruler over the realm of mankind and that He setsover it whomever He wishes.
22
"Yet you, his xson, Belshazzar, have 38not humbled your heart, yeventhough you knewallthis,
23
but you have 39exalted yourself against the 40Lord of heaven ; and they have brought the vessels of His housebefore you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines have been drinkingwine from them; and you have praised the 41gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which do not see, hear or understand. But the God42in whosehand are your life-breath and all your ways43, you have not glorified.
24"Then the z44hand was sent from Him and thisinscription was written out.
25
"Now this is the inscription that was written out: 'aaMENE, bbMENE, ccTEKEL, ddUPHARSIN.'
26"This is the interpretation of the eemessage : 'MENE'-God has numbered your kingdom and 45put an end to it.
27
" 'TEKEL '-you have been 46weighed on the scales and founddeficient.
28
" 'PERES '-your kingdom has beendivided and given over to the 47Medes and ffPersians."
29ThenBelshazzargaveorders, and they 48clothedDaniel with purple and put a necklace of goldaround his neck, and issued a proclamationconcerning him that he now hadauthority as the ggthird ruler in the kingdom.
