1"Hear, O Israel ! You are crossingover the Jordantoday to go in to dispossess1nationsgreater and mightierthan you, greatcitiesa2fortified to heaven,
2
a peoplegreat and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, '3Who can standbefore the sons of Anak ?'
3"Know therefore today that 4it is the LORD your God who is crossingoverbefore you as 5a consumingfire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that 6you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the LORD has spoken to you.
4
"7Do not say in your heart when the LORD your God has driven them out beforebyou, 'Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possessthisland,' but it is 8because of the wickedness of thesenations that the LORD is dispossessing them before you.
5
"It is 9not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of thesenations that the LORD your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm10the coathwhich the LORDswore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
6"Know, then, it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you thisgoodland to possess, for you are 11a dstubbornpeople.
7"Remember, do not forgethow you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness ; 12from the day that you left the land of Egyptuntil you arrived at thisplace, you have beenrebelliousagainst the LORD.
8
"Even 13at Horeb you provoked the LORD to wrath, and the LORD was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you.
9
"When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenantwhich the LORD had made with you, then I remained on the mountainfortydays and nights ; 14I neitheratebreadnordrankwater.
10
"The LORDgave me the twotablets of stone15written by the finger of God ; and on them were all the wordswhich the LORD had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.
11
"It came about 16at the end of fortydays and nights that the LORDgave me the twotablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.
12
"17Then the LORDsaid to me, 'Arise, godown from herequickly, for your peoplewhom you brought out of Egypt have actedcorruptly. They have 18quicklyturnedaside from the waywhich I commanded them; they have made a moltenimage for themselves.'
13
"The 19LORDspoke further to me, saying, 'I have seenthispeople, and indeed, it is a e20stubbornpeople.
14
'21Let Me alone , that I may destroy them and 22blot out their name from underheaven ; and I will make of you a nationmightier and greaterthan they.'
15
"23So I turned and camedown from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the twotablets of the covenant were in my twohands.
16
"And I saw that you had indeedsinned against the LORD your God. You had made for yourselves a moltencalf ; you had turnedasidequickly from the waywhich the LORD had commanded you.
17
"I tookhold of the twotablets and threw them from my hands and smashed them before your eyes.
18
"24I felldownbefore the LORD, 25as at the first, fortydays and nights ; 26I neitheratebreadnordrankwater, 27because of all your sinwhich you had committed in doingwhat was evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke Him to anger.
19
"For 28I was afraid of the anger and hotdispleasure with which the LORD was wrathfulagainst you in order to destroy you, 29but the LORDlistened to me that timealso.
20
"The LORD was angryenough with Aaron to destroy him; so I alsoprayed for Aaron at the sametime.
21
"30I took your fsinful thing, the calfwhich you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it verysmalluntil it was as fine as dust ; and I threw its dust into the brook that camedown from the mountain.
22
"Again at 31Taberah and at 32Massah and at 33Kibroth-hattaavah you provoked the LORD to wrath.
23
"When the LORDsent you from 34Kadesh-barnea, saying, '35Go up and possess the landwhich I have given you,' then you rebelledagainst the gcommand of the LORD your God ; 36you neitherbelieved Him norlistened to His voice.
24
"37You have beenrebelliousagainst the LORD from the day I knew you.
25
"38So I felldownbefore the LORD the fortydays and nights, which I hdidbecause the LORD had said He would destroy you.
26
"39I prayed to the LORD and said, 'O LordGOD, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mightyhand.
27'Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob ; do not look at the stubbornness of thispeople or at their wickedness or their sin.
28'Otherwise the land from which You brought us may say, "40Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the landwhich He had ipromised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to slay them in the wilderness."
29
'Yet they are Your people, even 41Your inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your 42greatpower and Your outstretchedarm.'
