Then the word of the LORDcame to me, saying,
"1What do you mean by usingthisproverbconcerning the land of Israel, saying, '2The fatherseat the sourgrapes, But the children'steethaare set on edge '?
"As I live," declares the LordbGOD, "you are surely not going to usethisproverb in Israelanymore.
4"Behold, 3allcsouls are Mine; the dsoul of the father as well as the esoul of the son is Mine. The fsoul who 4sins will die.
"But if a man is righteous and practicesjustice and righteousness,
and does not 5eat at the mountain shrines or 6lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or 7defile his neighbor'swife or approach a woman during her menstrualperiod -
if a man does not oppress anyone, but 8restores to the debtor his pledge, 9does not commitrobbery, but 10gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing,
if he does not lend money on 11interest or take12increase, if he keeps his hand from iniquity and 13executestruejusticebetweenman and man,
if he walks in 14My statutes and My ordinances so as to dealfaithfully -15he is righteous and will surely16live," declares the LordGOD.
"Then he may ghave a violentson who shedsblood and who doesany of thesethings to a brother11
(though he himself did not doany of thesethings ), that is, he eveneats at the mountain shrines, and 17defiles his neighbor'swife,
12oppresses the 18poor and needy, 19commitsrobbery, does not restore a pledge, but lifts up his eyes to the idols and 20commitsabomination,
he 21lends money on interest and takesincrease; will he live? He will not live! He has committedalltheseabominations, he will surely be put to death; his 22blood will be hon his own head.
"Now behold, he ihas a son who has observedall his father'ssinswhich he committed, and 23observing does not dolikewise.
"He does not eat at the mountain shrines or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor'swife,
or oppressanyone, or retain a pledge, or commitrobbery, but he 24gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing,
he keeps his hand from jthe poor, does not takeinterest or increase, but executes My ordinances, and walks in My statutes; 25he will not die for his father'siniquity, he will surelylive.
"As for his father, because he practicedextortion, robbed his brother and didwhat was not goodamong his people, behold, he will die for his iniquity.
"Yet you say, '26Why should the son not bear the punishment for the father'siniquity?' When the son has practiced27justice and righteousness and has observedall My statutes and done them, he shall surelylive.
"The person who 28sins will die. The 29son will not bear the punishment for the father'siniquity, nor will the fatherbear the punishment for the son'siniquity; the 30righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.
"But if the 31wickedmanturns from all his sinswhich he has committed and observesall My statutes and practicesjustice and righteousness, he shall surelylive; he shall not die.
"32All his transgressionswhich he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his 33righteousnesswhich he has practiced, he will live.
"34Do I haveanypleasure in the death of the wicked," declares the LordGOD, "kratherthan that he should 35turn from his ways and live?
"But when a righteousman36turnsaway from his righteousness, commitsiniquity and does according to all the abominations that a wickedmandoes, will he live? 37All his righteousdeedswhich he has done will not be remembered for his 38treacherywhich he has committed and his sinwhich he has committed; for them he will die.
"Yet you say, '39The way of the Lord is not right.' Hearnow, O house of Israel! Is 40My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right?
"When a righteousmanturnsaway from his righteousness, commitsiniquity and diesbecause of it, for his iniquitywhich he has committed he will die.
"Again, when a wickedmanturnsaway41from his wickednesswhich he has committed and practicesjustice and righteousness, he will save his life.
"Because he considered and turnedaway from all his transgressionswhich he had committed, he shall surelylive; he shall not die.
"But the house of Israelsays, 'The way of the Lord is not right.' Are My ways not right, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right?
30"Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his conduct," declares the LordGOD. "42Repent and turnaway from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not become a stumblingblock to you.
"43Castaway from you all your transgressionswhich you have committed and make yourselves a 44newheart and a newspirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel?
"For I have45nopleasure in the death of anyone who dies," declares the LordGOD. "Therefore, repent and live."
