1
Now Joseph had been takendown to Egypt ; and Potiphar, an Egyptianofficer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him afrom the 1Ishmaelites, who had taken him downthere.
22The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a bsuccessfulman. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
3
Now his master3saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD4caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4
So Joseph5foundfavor in his sight and cbecame his personalservant ; and he made him overseerover his house, and 6all that he owned he put in his dcharge.
5
It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and overall that he owned, the LORD7blessed the Egyptian'shouse on account of Joseph ; thus 8the LORD'Sblessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.
6
So he lefteverything he owned in Joseph'secharge ; and with him there he did not fconcern himself with anythingexcept the gfoodwhich he hate. Now Joseph was 9handsome in form and appearance.
7
It came about aftertheseevents10that his master'swifeilooked with desire at Joseph, and she said, "11Lie with me."
8
But 12he refused and said to his master'swife, "Behold, with me here, my masterjdoes not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has putall that he owns in my kcharge.
9
"l13There is no one greater in thishousethan I, and he has withheldnothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I dothisgreatevil and 14sin against God ?"
10
As she spoke to Josephday after day, he did not listen to her to liebeside her or be with her.
11
Now it happenedmoneday that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was thereinside.
12
She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and wentoutside.
13nWhen she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fledoutside,
14
she called to the men of her household and said to them, "See, he has brought in a oHebrew to us to makesport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I pscreamed .
15
"When he heard that I raised my voice and qscreamed, he left his garmentbeside me and fled and wentoutside."
16
So she rleft his garmentbeside her until his mastercamehome.
17
Then she 15spoke to him swith thesewords, "tThe Hebrewslave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to makesport of me;
18
and as I raised my voice and uscreamed, he left his garmentbeside me and fledoutside."
19
Now when his masterheard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "vThis is what your slavedid to me," 16his angerburned.
20
So Joseph'smastertook him and 17put him into the jail , the placewhere the king'sprisoners were confined ; and he was there in the jail .
21
But 18the LORD was with Joseph and extendedkindness to him, and 19gave him favor in the sight of the chiefjailer .
22
The chiefjailer20committed to Joseph'swchargeall the prisonerswho were in the jail ; so that whatever was donethere, he was xresponsible for it.
2321The chiefjailer did not superviseanything under yJoseph's chargebecause22the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, 23the LORD made to prosper.
